Mbappe snubbed the French National Team’s promotional photo shoot on Monday, L’Equipe reports. Mbappe boycotted several brands in March and wanted to negotiate with the French Football Federation (FFF) but things have not been resolved. The 23-year-old has donated all the money earned from France’s sponsors to charity. However, does not want to work with some fast food and betting brands. Meanwhile, France’s main sponsors include Uber Eats, KFC, Coca Cola and online sports betting company Betclic.

The FFF refuses to modify its image rights agreement until after the World Cup. Each Les Bleus player receives the same amount from image rights under a collective agreement.

Through his lawyer, Mbappe believes that the French players have control over the brands with which the FFF contracts. But the two sides could not find a common voice, when the FFF did not change any of the terms of the sponsorship contract that the players summoned for the 2022 World Cup must comply.

About $90 million of FFF’s $240 million in annual revenue comes from sponsorship deals. Under current image rights, players must sign an agreement when first called up to the squad, allowing their image to be used in posters containing up to five players for pre-match promotion. Remuneration from sponsorship will be divided equally among 23 players.

Mbappe rejected sponsors while on international duty in March. Mbappe and other squad members thought their image was utilized more, while receiving the same amount, and they should have some control over whose brands they promote.

What did FFF say?

FFF president Noel Le Graet said he held conciliatory conversations with Mbappe and other angry players in June. Le Graet said “no big problem” existed.

“I saw Mbappe alone, then at Clairefontaine, then in a group, then all the players,” he remarked at the FFF’s general assembly.

Le Graet told RMC: “No change till the World Cup, complete player equality. No big issues exist. False. First with him, then the ancient soldiers of the federation, the players.”
